Brutal Optimism
Brutalism is a controversial style, often praised by critics and detested by the public. Frequently treated in black and white, a seemingly obvious choice for it's hard angles and bare concrete, it's austerity becomes it's primary characteristic. While this isn't an entirely unfair representation, I see it as a reductive approach to the subject matter.
Brutal Optimism stands in contrast to that, emphasizing aspects of its hopeful origins as a solution to a need for affordable housing after the Second World War and the promise of a better future through social reform.
